Raised in Metairie, Karla Kilgore was drawn to the wine industry upon moving to San Francisco in the 1990s where she worked in nationally renowned restaurants, Stars and Aqua. Her next stop was Honolulu, HI, where she was the front house manager and maintained the wine programs of two new restaurants. Here, Karla met and became lifelong friends with, Rebecca Foulk (a veteran of the wine and food industry who moved to Covington to join the adventure of Barrel Wine Bar).
Prior to obtaining her certificate as a Sommelier, Karla returned to San Francisco where she rejoined Aqua as a manager, opened two more restaurants, and began consultation on private wine cellars. Before returning full circle to SE Louisiana, a stopover in Seattle allowed Karla to further her win career by representing multi-generational European families with an average of 300 plus years of winemaking experience and history across the U.S.
Tell us about Barrel Wine Bar
Wines like dark spaces; our curtains both insulate the interior from the outside heat and block the car headlights at night. We upcycled fence boards and wooden pallets to create a space that is warm and inviting, natural yet complex – like our favorite wines. Designed similarly to a winery tasting room, one sees and smells wine barrels, oak, corks, wine bottles, glassware, decanters, and books upon entry. Contemporary music – jazz, classical, vocals, mix plays in the background. The soft lighting encourages relaxation and conversations in the evening, ambient glows from our tabletop candles are conducive to a romantic evening and or a fun night out with friends. Our 30ft gallery wall showcases local artists’ work on a monthly rotation.
Barrel Wine Bar offers choices for people to have fun and expand their appreciation of wines by offering wines by tastes, the glass, or bottle. Our preservation system does an excellent job allowing us to offer sparkling wines as well as still and fortified. Our Small Plate Menu supports wine exploration by offering traditional foods that have complimented wines for centuries. The menu includes savory dishes such as cheese/meat boards, baked brie, escargot and bacon-wrapped dates. Additionally, our desserts can be paired with wines which range from slightly off-dry and sweet, heavy to crisp, or bubbly.
What makes Barrel Wine Bar unique?
Our goal is to demystify the vast wines which proudly express the varietal, the terroir, and different microclimates. As a bonus, the tasting of wines and (mental) assessment of flavors etc. is considered one of the best ways to keep all the parts of the brain active and young, we are doing something good for ourselves!
We offer weekly tastings of four pours, aka “wine flights,” to introduce as many wines as possible. We have LIVEMusic on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Wednesday Wine Socials, Small Group Wine Tastings on Fridays and Saturdays, Monthly 5-Course Wine Dinners with Guest Chefs from the North and South Shores, “First Sunday” Brunch and other Special Events. Besides these options, Barrel Wine also offers off-site services including wine and cheese events for businesses or private parties as well as sommelier services for cellar inventory and management.
Given your wine expertise, what advice can you offer to your guests?
Be adventurous! I remember that the first time I had a truffle I didn’t like the taste. Now? Forget it...I won’t share my truffle fries with anyone! Let’s talk about what you do and don’t like in a wine, recommendations can be made for new and interesting wines and pairings that allow you to appreciate what is in the glass along with how it works with food.
How long have you lived on the Northshore and what is your favorite thing about the area?
Besides being surrounded by amazing and generous neighbors who enjoy wonderful food and the riches of the region, I love driving home at night to Covington. Without the typical light pollution, the stars and moon are incredibly bright. After two-plus years of being here, I still am in awe, the way nature integrates with the homes. It’s incredible.
